Emotion-focused therapy (EFT) for individuals, although not as well-known as EFT for couples, is based on over four decades of process research. This research has identified numerous “maps” that describe how to use precise, detailed interventions to move clients through specific sequences of emotional states that lead to optimal outcomes in therapy. Using the therapeutic relationship as a critical part of the change process while employing these research based maps to move the therapy process forward is the hallmark of EFT. We will provide an overview of the evolution of EFT into what we believe is a cutting edge approach to psychotherapy, discuss how EFT conceptualizes emotion, and give several examples of the maps that modern EFT uses to guide the treatment process. A video that demonstrates the use of these maps in an actual therapy session will be shown. Jamie Levin-Edwards, Psy.D. is a licensed psychologist and has been in private practice in Portland for over three decades. Her career reflects a 35-year learning process which has included intense training in gestalt therapy, psychoanalytic therapy and emotion-focused therapy for both individuals and couples as well as her own psychoanalysis.  In addition to practicing individual and couple psychotherapy, Jamie provides individual and small group consultation for therapists. She has offered training seminars and workshops focusing on character issues, attachment theory, and emotion-focused therapy with both couples and individuals for Edwards Psychotherapy, the Oregon Psychological Association and the Oregon Counseling Association. Jamie is also a guest lecturer on emotion-focused therapy for the marriage and family graduate program at Portland State University.  Jamie has co-authored a chapter on integrating individual tasks into emotion-focused couple therapy in an upcoming book, The Clinical Handbook Of Emotion-Focused Therapy, to be published early next year. Charles Edwards, Ph.D. is a licensed psychologist who has been working with individuals, couples, and training other therapists for over 35 years. His work reflects intensive professional training in several different theoretical approaches, including psychodynamic psychotherapy, gestalt therapy, and emotion-focused therapy for individuals and couples. Charles has been teaching and training therapists throughout his career. He was a professor at the Oregon Graduate School of Professional Psychology where he taught doctoral level courses in statistics, research design, and humanistic psychotherapy. He now provides consultation and training in EFT for couples and individuals for Edwards Psychotherapy.  Charles has coauthored a chapter on integrating individual tasks into emotion-focused couple therapy in an upcoming book, The Clinical Handbook Of Emotion-Focused Therapy, to be published early next year.
